News on: VENICE EVENTS ROME AND THE BARBARIANS: THE BIRTH OF A NEW WORLD - Palazzo Grassi through July 2008
Open to the public to 20 July 2008.
Over 1,700 exhibits – including manuscripts, military and funerary objects, and paintings – in a huge show on view on the three floors of the palazzo, covering the centuries of combative coexistence of Rome and the Barbarian nations, documenting over a thousand years of European history, from Caesar’s campaigns to the dawn of the second millennium.
The exhibition, which focuses on the cultural and artistic relations between the two civilizations, offers articles coming from over 200 museums and collections in 24 countries. These include the precious “Teuderico” jewel box which throughout its 1,400-year history has never left its home at the Saint Maurice Abbey, in Switzerland; the tunic worn by Balthild; and the Sarcophagus of Portonaccio.
