TINTORETTO’S PARADISE AT DOGE’S PALACE

A Competition for the Doge’s Palace.

Open to the public through 3 December 2006.

The exhibition reconstructs the famous competition called by the old Venetian Serenissima Republic in 1582 for the creation of what would go down in history as the largest canvas in the world: the Great Council Hall’s Paradise. The show assembles for the first time under one roof, after more than four centuries, some of the paintings presented as candidates: These include works by Paolo Veronese, Francesco Bassano, Jacopo Palma the Younger and, naturally, by the winner, Jacopo Tintoretto, with a number of variations. “Guest” paintings, coming from the collections of such museums as the Louvre and the Thyssen-Bornemisza (of Madrid), the co-organizers of this show, can be compared here for the first time in the Great Council Hall itself. A computer station allows visitors to choose their own favorites to win. Catalogue edited by Jean Habert and published by 5 Continents.
